Here are our recommended Windows XP settings for blue screens, crashes, etc.
Virtual Memory: Please change the virtual memory settings within Windows to twice the amount of installed memory. Virtual memory is an area of the hard drive reserved by Windows to act as memory.
In most cases it is best to let Windows determine the Virtual Memory settings automatically. However, in the cases of instabilities the Virtual Memory settings should be changed. This can be done under any version of Windows (Win95/98/ME/2000/NT/XP).
Here is how to do this, from the Windows Desktop:
1. Click on Start Settings -> Control Panel
2. Then click on System -> Advanced -> Performance -> Virtual Memory -> Change
3. Set the Initial size (MB) to the amount of physical memory you have, and Maximum size (MB) to twice this amount. For example if you have 2 x 256MB modules installed, Initial should be set to 512 and Maximum 1024.
4. Then click on Set -> OK -> OK
5. Then restart your computer.
